Navratna: The Nine Planetary Gemstones and the Grahas They Serve

Navratna means nine gems. In Vedic astrology each of the nine grahas - the seven visible planets plus the two lunar nodes - is assigned a gemstone that is held to carry that planet's quality. Understanding the set is the foundation of everything else in gemstone astrology.

Why the nine are worn together

A Navratna ring or pendant sets all nine stones in a prescribed arrangement - ruby at the centre for the Sun, and the remaining eight placed around it in a fixed directional order matching the traditional planetary layout.

The reasoning behind wearing the full set is that it addresses every graha at once rather than singling one out. Because no planet is being amplified in isolation, Navratna is regarded as the safest way to work with gemstones when a full chart reading is not available - and it is one of the few gemstone items traditionally considered suitable for anyone.

The important caveat: for a Navratna to be treated as effective, all nine stones must be natural and untreated. Sets using synthetic or heavily treated stones are common at low price points and defeat the purpose.

Single stones versus the full set

A single prescribed stone is the stronger intervention. If a chart shows Jupiter weak but well-placed, a good Pukhraj addresses that specifically, and does so more forcefully than a Navratna where Jupiter is one of nine.

The risk is equally specific. Strengthening a malefic planet that is already causing difficulty can intensify the problem. Choosing quality

Four things determine whether a stone is worth what you pay.

1. Natural origin. Lab-created stones are chemically identical but are not accepted for astrological use.
2. Treatment. Heating, diffusion, glass-filling and dyeing all change value dramatically. See gemstone treatments explained.
3. Clarity and colour. Eye-clean stones with even, saturated colour are preferred; cracks and dark inclusions are traditionally avoided.

Before you buy

Insist on a certificate from a recognised laboratory stating natural origin, any treatment detected, weight and species. Verify the report number independently rather than trusting a printed card - ours can be checked on the certificate validation page.
