Gemstones by Zodiac Sign: A Rashi-Wise Reference for All 12 Signs

Sign-wise gemstone lists are the most-searched thing in this subject, and also the least precise. They are a reasonable starting point, so here is the table - followed by the caveat that will make you use it correctly.

The rashi-wise table

The caveat that matters

Vedic gemstone selection is properly based on the lagna - the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth - not the moon sign or the western sun sign. The ascendant changes roughly every two hours, so two people born on the same date can need entirely different stones.

Why it matters: which planets are functional benefics and which are functional malefics is determined by which houses they rule from the ascendant. Saturn is a yogakaraka for a Libra ascendant and a difficult malefic for a Cancer ascendant - and Blue Sapphire follows that logic, not the calendar.

Use the table above as an introduction. Use a birth-time chart before you spend serious money - particularly on Neelam, Gomed or Lehsunia.

Two rules of thumb worth knowing

The lagna lord. The stone of the planet ruling your ascendant is generally considered safe and strengthening, because that planet represents you. This is the single most reliable shortcut in the whole subject.

Life-stone, lucky-stone, fortune-stone. A common traditional grouping: the stone of the lagna lord (life), of the 5th lord (luck) and of the 9th lord (fortune). Worn together where the combination is compatible, they are considered a balanced set.

Where to start without a reading

If you do not have your birth time and want something useful today:

  • Navratna - all nine planets addressed at once, and traditionally suitable for anyone. See the Navratna guide.
  • Rudraksha - 5 Mukhi carries no restriction on who may wear it, unlike most gemstones.
  • Healing crystals - amethyst, rose quartz and clear quartz have no astrological prerequisite at all.

What to avoid

  • Never wear Blue Sapphire on a sign-wise list alone. It is the stone most capable of causing harm when wrongly matched.
  • Do not combine stones of hostile planets - see can you wear two gemstones together.
  • Do not confuse western birthstones with Vedic stones. The two systems have different origins and different logic.
