Which Finger, Which Metal, Which Day: The Complete Gemstone Wearing Guide

Buying the right stone is half the job. Wearing it correctly - right metal, right finger, right day, energised before first use - is the other half. This is the reference table we send customers after purchase.

The rules behind the table

Right hand or left? The right hand is standard for men. For women, both traditions exist - many practitioners specify the left. Where a family tradition exists, follow it; where none does, use the right.

Why the metal matters. Gold carries a solar and Jupiterian quality, silver a lunar one. Saturn's stones are set in silver or iron because gold's expansive quality is considered to work against Saturn's contracting nature. Panchdhatu - a five-metal alloy - is a neutral option when the correct metal is impractical.

Why the setting must be open-backed. The tradition holds that the stone should touch the skin. A closed-back setting looks tidier and protects the stone, but is not the astrological arrangement.

What hora means. Each day is divided into 24 planetary hours, and the hora of a stone's ruling planet is the most auspicious time to first wear it. It refines the timing; it is not a requirement. The correct day, during the waxing moon, is sufficient.

The energisation sequence

  1. On the evening before, soak the ring in raw milk or Ganga jal for a few hours - except pearl, coral and emerald, which are soft or oiled and should only be wiped with a soft damp cloth.
  2. Rinse in clean water and dry.
  3. On the chosen morning, bathe and wear clean clothes.
  4. Place the ring on a clean cloth before your deity or in the puja space. Offer incense, a lamp, flowers and something in the planet's colour.
  5. Chant the planet's beeja mantra 108 times, holding the ring.
  6. Put it on with a clear statement of intent.
  7. Where the tradition prescribes it, make a related donation - black sesame for Saturn, wheat or turmeric for Jupiter, red cloth for Mars.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing during the waning moon. First wear should be during the waxing fortnight.
  • Combining stones carelessly. Some pairings are traditionally avoided - see can you wear two gemstones together.
  • Closed-back settings that prevent skin contact.
  • Guessing the weight. Use the carat to ratti calculator.
  • Skipping the trial for Neelam, Gomed and Lehsunia. These three deserve it.
