Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj): Jupiter's Gem for Wisdom, Wealth and Marriage

If Neelam is the stone people are warned about, Pukhraj is the one they are pointed towards. It is the most frequently recommended gemstone in Vedic practice, and the reason is straightforward: Jupiter is the natural benefic of the chart, so strengthening it rarely backfires.

The stone and its planet

Yellow Sapphire is corundum - the same mineral as ruby and blue sapphire - coloured yellow to golden by trace iron. It belongs to Guru, Jupiter, the graha of wisdom, expansion, teachers, children, wealth and, in a woman's chart, of marriage.

Ceylon material is the traditional benchmark, prized for a clean, lemon-to-golden yellow. Bangkok and African stones are more affordable and more commonly heated.

What it is used for

  • Financial growth - the association is with sustained expansion rather than sudden windfall.
  • Marriage prospects, particularly in a woman's chart where Jupiter signifies the husband.
  • Education and teaching - a favourite among students, academics and advisers.
  • Fertility and matters concerning children.
  • Good judgement and sound counsel in decision-making.
  • Strengthening a weak or afflicted Jupiter in the birth chart.

Who it suits

Jupiter is a functional benefic for a majority of ascendants, which is why Pukhraj is prescribed so widely. It is particularly favoured for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants.

Caution is advised for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, where Jupiter can rule difficult houses. Even here it is more often neutral than harmful - which is why Pukhraj carries no trial-period tradition as strict as Neelam's. That said, a chart reading is still the right first step.

Pukhraj, citrine and topaz - not the same thing

This confusion costs buyers real money.

  • Yellow Sapphire is corundum, hardness 9, and the astrological stone of Jupiter.
  • Citrine is quartz, hardness 7, often sold as "Sunela" and marketed as a budget Pukhraj. It is a fine wealth crystal in its own right but is not Jupiter's gem.
  • Yellow Topaz is a different mineral again, hardness 8. Also sold as a substitute; also not corundum.

Substitutes are legitimate if sold honestly as substitutes and priced accordingly. The fraud is selling citrine at sapphire prices. A certificate stating the species settles it in one line.

Choosing a good stone

  1. Colour - even, medium-saturated yellow to golden. Very pale stones are weak; brownish or greenish tints reduce value.
  2. Clarity - eye-clean is the goal. Avoid stones with visible cracks, black inclusions or milkiness.
  3. Cut - a well-proportioned oval or cushion. Windowed stones that look see-through in the centre are poorly cut.
  4. Treatment - unheated commands a large premium; heated is widely accepted. Diffusion and glass-filling are not.
  5. Weight - commonly 3 to 7 ratti. Use the carat to ratti calculator.

Wearing rules

  • Metal: gold, which resonates with Jupiter. Panchdhatu is an acceptable alternative.
  • Finger: index finger of the right hand.
  • Day and time: Thursday morning, during the waxing moon, ideally in Guru hora.
  • Mantra: Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, 108 times before first wearing.
  • Setting: open-backed so the stone touches the skin.
