Tiger Eye: Grounding, Courage and Protection from Self-Doubt

Tiger eye is quartz that has replaced fibrous crocidolite, retaining its parallel fibre structure. That structure produces chatoyancy - the silky band of light that moves across the stone as you turn it, and the reason for the name.

What it is used for

  • Courage in the face of self-doubt - the use it is best known for.
  • Grounding. Frequently chosen by people who describe themselves as scattered or perpetually anxious.
  • Focus and follow-through on long projects.
  • Protection. One of the oldest recorded uses - Roman soldiers carried it into battle.
  • Decision-making where fear rather than information is the obstacle.
  • Solar plexus and root chakra work, in the modern system.

The distinction people find useful: amethyst calms you down, tiger eye steadies you so you can move. If your problem is paralysis rather than agitation, tiger eye is the better fit.

The three varieties

  • Gold-brown tiger eye - the classic. Confidence, willpower, practical action. The default choice.
  • Red tiger eye (ox eye) - heat-treated gold tiger eye. Associated with motivation, vitality and root-chakra energy. Useful where the issue is lethargy.
  • Blue tiger eye (hawk's eye) - the natural unoxidised form. Calmer than gold; associated with communication and clear perception. A good choice when courage is needed for speaking rather than doing.

All three are genuine. Red is treated - honest sellers say so, and it makes no difference to most practitioners.

How to use it

  1. Bracelet on the right wrist - the projecting side, appropriate for a stone about outward action.
  2. Carried in a pocket and held before a difficult meeting, interview or conversation.
  3. On the desk as a working anchor during a long project.
  4. Held at the solar plexus in meditation, with attention on steady breathing.
  5. As a mala for practice focused on discipline.

Quality and imitations

The chatoyant band is the measure of quality. Look for a strong, sharp band with high contrast that moves cleanly as you rotate the stone. Dull, flat material with little movement is low grade. South African material is the traditional benchmark.

Watch for:

  • Dyed tiger eye in unnatural colours - bright blue, green, purple. These are not natural varieties.
  • Glass imitations with a printed or fibre-optic "cat's eye" effect. The band on glass is too regular and does not shift with the light in the same way.
  • Confusion with cat's eye chrysoberyl. Entirely different, far more valuable, and the astrological stone of Ketu - see our Rahu and Ketu guide. Tiger eye is a healing crystal, not a Navratna stone.

Care

Hardness 7, so it is durable and suits daily bracelet wear. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. It is one of the few crystals that tolerates brief sunlight without fading, though prolonged exposure is still best avoided. Cleanse with sound, smoke or moonlight.

Pairings

  • Pyrite - courage with drive, a common business combination.
  • Black tourmaline - grounding with protection.
  • Citrine - action with abundance.
  • 6 Mukhi Rudraksha - both associated with willpower.
  • Clear quartz for amplification.
