Crystal Trees, Spheres and Pyramids: What Each Shape Is For

The same amethyst can be sold as a tumble, a sphere, a point, a pyramid or a tree, at very different prices. The mineral is identical - what changes is how the form directs attention, and what tradition has assigned to each shape.

Crystal trees

Wire branches holding dozens of small chips, set on an agate or crystal base. The tree is a growth symbol, and the form is most associated with prosperity, family and steady increase - which is why it is the most common gifting piece in this category.

Placement: south-east for wealth, in Vastu terms; the living room or an office reception. A citrine or pyrite tree on a work desk; an amethyst tree in a bedroom or meditation space; rose quartz in the bedroom or family room.

Spheres

A sphere radiates in every direction equally, which is why it is the shape chosen for whole-room work rather than directed intent. Spheres are also the traditional scrying form.

Placement: the centre of a room, on an altar, or in a meditation space. Amethyst, rose quartz and clear quartz are the common choices. Never leave a clear quartz sphere in direct sunlight - it focuses light like a lens and has genuinely started fires.

Pyramids

A square base gathers and the apex directs, so the pyramid is treated as a focusing form. It is used for holding an intention in place rather than broadcasting it.

Placement: on a desk pointing towards your working seat, on an altar, or at the centre of a crystal grid. Orgonite pyramids - resin with metal and crystal - are a modern variant popular for workspaces.

Points and towers

A single-terminated point directs energy out through its tip; double-terminated points are said to move it both ways, and are favoured for connecting two things. Towers are larger polished points used as room pieces.

Placement: point it towards what you are working on. In a grid, points face inward to concentrate or outward to disperse. A black tourmaline or obsidian tower near an entrance is the standard protective arrangement.

Raw clusters and geodes

Unpolished natural formations with many terminations. The traditional view is that clusters cleanse and uplift a whole space, and they are also used to cleanse other stones placed on them.

Placement: a shared living space, a hallway, or on a shelf where the household passes regularly. Amethyst geodes are the classic choice.

Tumbles and palm stones

Small polished pieces - the most practical form, and the best value. Made for carrying, holding in meditation, chakra layouts and grids.

Use: a pocket, a purse, under a pillow, or in the hand during practice. If you are starting a collection, start here rather than with display pieces.

Choosing between them

Two practical cautions

• Sunlight. Amethyst, rose quartz and fluorite fade. Clear quartz spheres focus light. Keep display pieces away from windows.
• Dust. Raw clusters collect it in every crevice. A soft brush every few weeks keeps them looking alive.
