The 7 Chakras and Their Crystals: A Practical Starting Guide

Chakras are energy centres described in the tantric and yogic traditions, arranged along the spine from base to crown. Each has a name, an element, a colour, a seed syllable and an associated area of life. Crystal work maps stones onto them mostly by colour, which is a modern convention rather than a classical one - worth knowing, and still useful in practice.

The seven centres

1. Muladhara - Root

Base of the spine. Red. Earth. Beeja: LAM. Survival, security, belonging, the body. When unsettled: anxiety about money and safety, restlessness, feeling ungrounded.

Crystals: red jasper, black tourmaline, hematite, smoky quartz, garnet.

2. Svadhisthana - Sacral

Below the navel. Orange. Water. Beeja: VAM. Emotion, creativity, pleasure, relationship. When unsettled: creative block, emotional numbness or volatility.

Crystals: carnelian, orange calcite, moonstone, sunstone.

3. Manipura - Solar Plexus

Above the navel. Yellow. Fire. Beeja: RAM. Will, confidence, personal power, digestion. When unsettled: low self-esteem, difficulty asserting, or its opposite - domineering.

Crystals: citrine, tiger eye, pyrite, yellow jasper.

4. Anahata - Heart

Centre of the chest. Green (also pink). Air. Beeja: YAM. Love, compassion, grief, connection. When unsettled: resentment, isolation, difficulty giving or receiving.

Crystals: rose quartz, green aventurine, jade, malachite, rhodonite.

5. Vishuddha - Throat

Throat. Blue. Ether. Beeja: HAM. Communication, truth, expression. When unsettled: not saying what needs saying, or speaking without listening.

Crystals: lapis lazuli, blue lace agate, sodalite, turquoise, amazonite.

6. Ajna - Third Eye

Between the brows. Indigo. Light. Beeja: OM. Intuition, perception, insight. When unsettled: confusion, poor judgement, disconnection from instinct.

Crystals: amethyst, lapis lazuli, fluorite, labradorite, sodalite.

7. Sahasrara - Crown

Top of the head. Violet or white. Beeja: silence. Consciousness, meaning, connection to the greater whole. When unsettled: cynicism, purposelessness.

Crystals: clear quartz, amethyst, selenite, howlite.

A starting practice

  1. Lie comfortably on your back in a quiet room.
  2. Place one stone at each chakra position, from root to crown. A seven-chakra set is designed for exactly this.
  3. Breathe slowly and move your attention up the body, resting at each point for around two minutes.
  4. At each centre, silently repeat its beeja syllable a few times.
  5. Finish at the crown, then rest for a few minutes before getting up.

Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough. Twice a week, done properly, is better than a daily attempt you abandon.

Starting without buying everything

You do not need all seven stones to begin.

  • A 7-chakra bracelet or mala covers the full set in one piece and is the most economical starting point.
  • Clear quartz alone is traditionally considered usable for any chakra.
  • Work on one centre at a time. Identify what is actually troubling you, buy that stone, and give it a month.

A common and sensible caution: work from the root upward. Grounding first. Practices that begin at the third eye without a settled base tend to be unproductive.

Cleanse your stones regularly, particularly after emotionally intense sessions - see how to cleanse and charge crystals. Browse 7-chakra bracelets and chakra malas.
