Hessonite (Gomed) and Cat's Eye (Lehsunia): Working with Rahu and Ketu

Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies. They are the north and south lunar nodes - the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, and where eclipses occur. In Vedic astrology they are treated as full grahas with their own dashas, and each has a gemstone.

Both stones are powerful, both act on subtle and psychological levels, and neither should be worn on a general recommendation. This is the part of gemstone astrology where a proper reading is not optional.

Hessonite (Gomed) - Rahu

Hessonite is a grossular garnet, honey to cinnamon-brown, ideally with a distinctive smoky quality. Rahu governs ambition, foreign lands, technology, sudden change, unconventional paths - and also confusion, obsession and deception.

Traditionally used for:

• Relief during Rahu mahadasha or antardasha where confusion and instability dominate.
• Kaal Sarp dosha, as part of a wider remedial approach.
• Freedom from unexplained fear, paranoia and mental fog.
• Success in foreign matters - travel, migration, overseas business.
• Careers with a strong Rahu signature: technology, aviation, research, media.

Quality: look for a transparent honey to reddish-brown colour with good clarity. The classic hessonite "treacle" effect - a swirled internal appearance - is characteristic and desirable. Avoid opaque, very dark or heavily included stones. Sri Lankan material is the traditional preference.

Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) - Ketu

The astrological Lehsunia is chrysoberyl cat's eye, showing a sharp, mobile band of light - chatoyancy - across the dome of a cabochon. Quartz cat's eye is a common and much cheaper substitute; it is a different mineral, and should be sold as such.

Ketu governs detachment, spirituality, intuition, past-life tendencies, and sudden loss or gain.

Traditionally used for:

• Relief during Ketu dasha, particularly where there is unexplained loss or drift.
• Protection from hidden enemies and from what cannot be seen coming.
• Deepening spiritual practice and intuition.
• Sudden reversals in business or speculation.
• Chronic conditions that resist diagnosis, traditionally.

Quality: the eye is everything. It should be sharp, straight, centred, and should open and close cleanly as the stone is rocked under a single light source. A honey-and-milk effect - one half of the stone lighter than the other across the band - is the classic mark of a fine specimen. A fuzzy, off-centre or wandering eye drops the value sharply.

Why caution matters here

Both stones are described in classical texts as acting quickly and unsubtly. Worn without a chart-based reason, the reported effects tend to be disruptive rather than merely absent.

Run a trial period exactly as for Blue Sapphire: three to seven days, keeping a daily written note. Disturbed sleep, sudden anxiety, unusual conflict or a run of small accidents are signals to stop. Do not push through them.

These are not stones to buy because a website said you are Manglik or Kaal Sarp. Get the chart read by someone accountable for the reading.

Lehsunia: silver or panchdhatu, middle or ring finger of the right hand, Tuesday or Thursday evening during the waxing moon. Mantra Om Sram Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah, 108 times. Commonly 5 to 7 ratti.
