Rose Quartz: Working with the Stone of Unconditional Love

Rose quartz is pale pink quartz, coloured by microscopic mineral inclusions. It is associated with the heart chakra and, in the modern crystal tradition, with love in its widest sense - not only romantic.

Good rose quartz is a soft, even pink - translucent rather than transparent. Madagascan material is generally the finest. Very pale, chalky white-pink material is low grade.

• Dyed quartz sold as rose quartz. Tells: an unnaturally vivid or hot pink, colour pooling in cracks, and colour that comes off on a cloth with acetone.
• Glass imitations in cheap bracelets. Glass warms quickly in the hand, often shows tiny round bubbles under magnification, and lacks quartz's slight internal cloudiness.

Genuine rose quartz is usually slightly cloudy - a completely transparent, flawless "rose quartz" bead is likely glass. Star rose quartz, which shows a faint six-rayed asterism in direct light, is a natural and prized variety.

Care

• Fades in sunlight. Like amethyst, keep it out of direct sun. This is the main way people ruin a good piece.
• Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth.
