Red Coral (Moonga): Mars, Courage and the Mangal Dosha Question

Red Coral is organic - the calcified skeleton of a marine polyp, not a mineral - and it belongs to Mangal, Mars. Mars governs courage, physical energy, drive, siblings, property and conflict. Moonga is worn to strengthen all of it.

The Manglik question

Mangal dosha occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant, and it is traditionally read as a source of friction in marriage. Red Coral is the standard remedial stone prescribed for it.

Two honest qualifications belong here. First, the dosha is cancelled or reduced by a long list of chart conditions - Mars in its own sign or exalted, aspects from benefics, a matching dosha in the partner's chart - and a great many people labelled Manglik are not meaningfully affected. Second, Moonga is a support alongside a considered match, not an insurance policy.

Get the dosha confirmed by a competent reading before buying a stone for it. A large proportion of "Manglik" diagnoses do not survive a careful look at the chart.

Who should be cautious

Mars is a functional benefic for Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aries and Pisces ascendants. Caution applies for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius.

Independent of the chart: Mars is a hot, aggressive graha. People already prone to anger, high blood pressure or inflammatory conditions sometimes find Moonga uncomfortable. Start light - 5 ratti rather than 9 - and observe over a fortnight.

Buying: what actually goes wrong

Coral is soft, porous and easy to imitate, which makes this category unusually risky.

• Dyed coral. Pale or white coral dyed red. Check the drill hole and any crevices for concentrated colour, and be suspicious of a colour that is uniformly perfect.
• Reconstituted coral. Coral powder bound with resin and moulded. Look for an unnaturally even texture with no growth structure.
• Plastic and glass imitations. Warm to the touch, unusually light, and often with visible mould seams.
• Bamboo coral. A different, cheaper species, dyed and sold as precious coral.

Genuine precious coral shows fine parallel growth striations under magnification, feels cool and dense, and has a subtly uneven colour. Italian and Japanese material is the traditional preference. Always ask for a report that states species and confirms no dye.

Care

At hardness 3.5, coral scratches easily and is attacked by acids - including lemon juice and vinegar. Remove it before cleaning, cooking with acids, or swimming. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and store separately.
