Emerald (Panna): Mercury's Gem for Intellect, Speech and Business

Emerald is beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium, and it belongs to Budh - Mercury. Mercury governs intellect, speech, calculation, commerce and nervous-system function, which makes Panna the stone most associated with people who trade, analyse or speak for a living.

What it is used for

• Clarity of thought and analytical sharpness.
• Communication - writing, public speaking, negotiation.
• Business and trading, especially where quick judgement is required.
• Learning and memory - often recommended alongside 4 Mukhi Rudraksha for students.
• Speech difficulties and nervous tension, traditionally.

Who it suits

Mercury is a functional benefic for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, and Panna is most freely recommended there. Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants should have a chart read first.

Why emeralds have inclusions

This is the single most misunderstood thing about buying Panna. Emerald forms under conditions that virtually guarantee internal fractures and inclusions - collectively called the jardin, French for garden. An eye-clean emerald of any size is extraordinarily rare and priced accordingly.

So inclusions are not, by themselves, a defect. What matters is where they are and what they do:

• Acceptable: fine internal wisps and a soft jardin that does not reach the surface.
• Problematic: a fracture running to the surface, which weakens the stone and admits filler.
• Traditionally avoided for astrological use: black spots, and cracks visible without magnification.

Oiling - the treatment you must ask about

The overwhelming majority of emeralds on the market are oiled: cedar oil or a resin is drawn into surface-reaching fractures to improve apparent clarity. Minor oiling with natural cedar oil is standard and accepted throughout the trade.

What you need disclosed is the degree. Certificates grade it as none, minor, moderate or significant. A significantly oiled stone can look two grades better than it is, and the treatment can degrade with time and heat - including from an ultrasonic cleaner at a jeweller's counter.

Ask for the oiling grade in writing. A seller who cannot answer that question is not the right seller for an emerald.

Quality factors

1. Colour is king - a vivid, slightly bluish green. Pale or yellowish-green material is far less valuable.
2. Origin - Colombian is the traditional benchmark; Zambian stones tend bluer and cleaner; Brazilian material is widely available and good value.
3. Cut - the emerald cut exists because it protects a brittle stone's corners. Prefer it.
4. Clarity - judged relative to other emeralds, never against sapphire or ruby standards.
5. Weight - commonly 3 to 6 ratti; use the carat to ratti calculator.

Care

Emerald is hard but brittle, and oiled stones are vulnerable to heat and solvents. Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, remove it before household chemicals, and store it separately from harder stones.
